SATIRICAL COINS

Summary

This is a small coin and medal excursion dealing with satire, and written upon the request of friends.
I have divided, according to my idea of it, coins and medals into five principal groups.
a) The most recent issues ( modern ).
b) Coins transformed with the graving tool.
c) Issues deriving from coins or medals relating to:

the defeat of Napoleon III° and his defeat at Sedan, Admiral Howe,
to Napoleon I°, to Maria Theresa of Austria, to the medallist Christian Vermuth
and to many others from 1550 onwards.
d) Satiric medals of particular value, produced during the British Restoration period
of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Most attractive and sought after are

the historical medals relating to the strangled lawyer Edmund Godfrey.
e) The medals of a great artist, Karl Goetz, with numerous examples relating to WW1 and WW2.

A few rare exceptions aside, satiric coins of ancient Rome and Greece are unknown.

Molti amici mi hanno chiesto di parlare delle monete o delle medaglie satiriche....

Lo faccio molto volentieri, ma... tenete conto che, empiricamente, di mia iniziativa, le ho divise in 5 gruppi. Ne do qui alcuni esempi. Questi esempi sono ben lungi dal soddisfare tutta la storicità e la quantità di monete, medaglie, tokens esistenti. Possono dare tuttavia un'idea di quanto è possibile reperire, non certo facilmente, sul mercato. La produzione di monete satiriche è ovviamente sempre legata ad avvenimenti storici di una certa importanza.

a) Quelle recentissime ...

b) Quelle, generalmente recenti, che derivano da un'azione di bulino o come le definisco io "elaborate da trapano dentistico": un amatore con buona "verve" umoristica modifica monete di certi periodi storici di particolare "intensità", mutando personaggi, facce, simboli o altro.

c) Quelle che nascono "satiriche", ma di derivazione monetaria, come ad es. quelle, molto note, prolifiche francesi di Napoleone III° a Sedan del 2 settembre 1870, di chiara propaganda di guerra, e tante simili anche di altri paesi che mostrano personaggi ed avvenimenti storici importanti. Monete e medaglie satiriche si riferiscono anche all'Ammiraglio Richard Howe, a Napoleone I° o più recenti delle guerre di Indipendenza Italiana. Viene proposta anche una bella serie di medaglie di Maria Teresa, delle quali ne viene mostrata solo una parte. Altre sono quelle in cui spicca l'arte del medaglista Christian Vermuth e di tanti altri artisti, qui inquadrati..

d) Una citazione particolare meritano le "vere" satiriche, quelle della "Restaurazione" inglesi del 1600 delle quali molti esempi sono già nel mio sito di Edmund Godfrey e che qui ripropongo.

e) Quelle del "favoloso" Karl Goetz, medaglista tedesco, superbo satirico protagonista di una serie di bellissime medaglie caricaturali relative alla Ia ed alla IIa guerra mondiale, ovviamente piuttosto care. Il suo libro, molto ricercato, a cura di W. Kienast è citato in bibliografia. Ecco alcuni esempi.

Desidero precisare infine che non ho notizie di monete-medaglie romane di tipo satirico (da non confondere con le "spinctriae" sessuali !) tranne forse un denario attribuito a Tito Livio, un sesterzio di Massimino Trace (la cui testa è stata "sacrificata" attorno alle mura di Aquileia), un antoniniano di Gallieno (umoristicamente chiamato "Galliena") ed una moneta sexi-satirica di Nerone ( ... ). Tutte mi sono sfuggite ... tranne quest'ultima che però con ogni probabilità è un falso ...

Non escludo tuttavia ne esistano anche di molto più antiche.

Questo solo per dare una breve visione di questo argomento estremamente vasto.
